ECOSCOPE Program Director

Dr. Steven Hallam is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and Leopold Leadership Fellow. His lab specializes in the field of microbial ecological genomics and genetics with specific emphasis on the creation of computational tools for taxonomic and functional binning, population genome assembly, functional screening, and comparative community analysis. He is the co-founder of Koonkie, a cloud-based ecoinformatics services provider and Ekosense, an analytical services company that combines geochemical and genomic parameter information for field diagnostics and source tracking.

 

Nolan Shelley (Graduate Teaching Assistant) is a PhD student in Botany at the U. of British Columbia working with Dr. Jae-Hyeok Lee.

Dr. Kim Dill-McFarland (Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, 2017-19) worked in undergraduate data science education with EDUCE, ECOSCOPE, and the Department of Microbiology & ImmunologyShe obtained her PhD in Microbiology at the U. of Wisconsin-Madison working with Dr. Garret Suen. She is now a Bioinformatics Research Consultant in Allergy and Infectious Disease at the U. of Washington.

 

Julia Beni (Graduate Teaching Assistant 2017/18) is pursuing a PhD in Environmental Engineering at the U. of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

 

Kris Hong (Undergraduate Teaching Assistant 2017/18) received his BSc in Statistics with a concentration in Computer Science at the U. of British Columbia while working with Dr. Sarah Henderson at the BC Centre for Disease Control. Kris is now pursuing his graduate degree.

 

Jonah Lin (Directed Studies in Computer Science  2018) received his BSc in Microbiology & Immunology and Computer Science at the U. of British Columbia. He created the EDUCE course compiler and data manipulator tools available here.

 

Yue Liu (Graduate Teaching Assistant) is a Masters student in Applied Mathematics at the U. of British Columbia working with Dr. Leah Keshet.

 

Dr. Lisa McEwen (Graduate Teaching Assistant, 2017/18) received her PhD in Medical Genetics while working with Dr. Michael Kobor at the U. of British Columbia. She is now a Data Consultant in Clinical Analytics with the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

 

David Yin (Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, 2018) received his BSc in Computer Science and Statistics at the U. British Columbia. David is now a Software Engineer at Citadel.
